5 Quick Tips for an Easy Closet Overhaul

1. Start tossing! Organizing experts and wardrobe gurus say if you haven’t worn it in a year, it should be as good as gone. I happened upon a denim romper that hadn’t seen the light of day since Labor Day 2009, mostly because I’d forgotten about it, so I gave myself a “year plus two seasons” reprieve. But if an item is uncomfortable, unflattering, or a poor fit, no amount of time languishing in the closet is going to fix any of that. Cut your closet-space losses, sister.

2. Make a pile for the tailor. But if all a piece needs is a little facelift, a few dollars spent at the tailor can make a world of difference. Turn a so-so knee length skirt into a sexy mini, have a few inches let out of your slimmest-fitting dress to make it billowy and spring-appropriate, or add elbow patches to a blazer that needs a little extra oomph. It’s the best money you’ll spend all season, guaranteed.

3. Organize by color. You’re about a gajillion times less likely to remember some rarely-worn dress if it’s shoved in with overwhelming prints and textures that have more recognizability in your closet. Put all of your blacks together, all of your blues, all of your pinks, and it’ll be like you’re shopping in your own little store—one where every piece fits you!

4. Create more space. My itty bitty Greenwich Village studio has just one closet, and it only holds enough for one season at a time. When I moved in, I discovered that there was enough space for two rods across the width of the closet (one on top and one on bottom), although there was only one there. I moved one bar up about a foot and added a second bar halfway down so it could hold twice as many clothes! You can also invest in a few cheap shelves that are moveable, or add an extra shelf above the hanging bars.

5. Get smart about storage. Still don’t have enough room? (Me neither). My solution? Space Bags. I manage to fit about 5 drawers worth of sweaters in one teeny bundle that slips under the bed until I need ‘em next fall.
